Preparation for NYS Soil Health Field Day at the Farm

Preparations have begun for the cover cropping demonstration field. The field at the corner of Route 9w and Wemple Road was planted with a mix of Sorgum Sudangrass, Sunhemp and sunflowers. These species were selected for their ability to build organic matter, improve soil structure, and help reduce compaction over time while supporting biological activity within the soil.

These plots will serve as a working example of soil health practices for the upcoming 2026 NY Soil Health Field Day on August 4, 2026. Farmers, educators, and community members are invited to visit the site to see these systems in practice.

Special thanks to Danielle Doering, Regional Agronomy Educator, Cornel Cooperative Extension for her support and expertise and Farmer Jon for the help with site prep.

Can’t wait to see the field grow!
