1st Volunteer Day
BeECO’s first volunteer day was a great success!
Now that the vegetation has died back from frost, it is easier to access the site and begin clearing and preparing. In the spring, a kiosk and hillside trail will be installed at the site and will provide a place of quiet access to nature here in Glenmont. The kiosk is funded by a 2025 Albany County Legislature Award aimed to improve, enhance or develop parks.
The cleanup day was crisp and snowflakes were in the air, but volunteers quickly jumped into the task at hand. It didn’t take long before we were warmed up by our digging and excavations.
Many hands cleared the lower part of the trail. In the spring we will find skunk cabbage and other flora freely growing in the soil freed from litter and trash.
Digging out imbedded metal sheets took tenacity, teamwork and a good amount of effort. As we dug and pried, we talked about how the work was rewarding and strenuous effort made the triumph even more satisfying.
Metal flashing, buckets, bottles, fencing, barbed wire and trash were all dug from the streamside
We found ten tires, metal parts, styrofoam sheets and discarded cinderblocks half buried and entangled in roots and vines.
This is the first of many volunteer opportunities that will be held at the farm. Hope to see you at one sometime soon.
